My family and I were recently invited to try a round of disc golf at the New England Disc Golf Center in Southwick. It just opened up last Fall and it is a great addition to the area!
None of us had ever played disc golf before, so I was excited to try it out. If you can throw a frisbee, you can play. As you might imagine, the game is played very much like a round of golf. Each player takes a turn throwing a disc toward the target basket which they do call holes like in golf. Each hole has a par and however many throws it takes you to get your disc into the basket that is your score. The person with the lowest score at the end of the game wins.
Seems pretty simple except there are obstacles and some of the baskets are pretty far. There are two courses. The Meadows course is considered easier and has 9 holes. The Spoonwood Ridge course is for advanced players and has 18 holes. We did the easier course. Half of it is in a meadow, but the other half is actually in the woods. So the obstacles here are trees, bushes, and streams! It really is a beautiful setting. I loved walking through the woods going from hole to hole. I do recommend bug spray and either long socks or pants.
Daily rates are $10 for adults 18+, $7 for age 12-17 and free for kids under 12. They also offer youth, adult and family memberships. They are open seven days a week from dawn until dusk and it is cash only. Discs are available at no extra cost.
Wednesday nights are FUN Nights. The focus is on families, beginners, and recreational players, but advanced players are welcome, too. Starting at 6 PM, play 9 hole matches on the Meadows course with a shotgun start. Optional instructional round at 5:15 PM. Cost is only $7 for non-member adults and $2 for kids under 12 and members. Loaner discs are available and prizes for winners.
Casual League every Sunday at 10 AM on the 18 hole Spoonwood Ridge course. Blind draw doubles. Partnership with the best score shares the winnings. Cost is $10 per person. $5 goes toward NEDGC and $5 goes toward the winner's pot. All you have to do is show up on time.
If you haven't tried disc golf yet, I highly recommend it. It is a great game for families. My boys are teenagers and they loved it so much they wanted to keep playing after 9 holes. We played with an eight-year-old who was already a pro! So as long as they are old enough to walk, they can play. Get the kids outdoors and exercising while playing a challenging game and having fun!
