Come see a magical shadow puppet presentation of Jane Yolen's classic book Owl Moon and learn about the seven native owl species in Massachusetts. A 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. Each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." One thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place. Please try to read the entire book before the book discussion.

Saturday, February 4 - 4th Annual Ice Harvest

The event is being co-sponsored by NCCHP, the Suffield Historical Society, the Suffield Land Conservancy and the Granville Cultural Council.  Come join Dennis Picard of Storrowton Village Museum as he demonstrates and encourages others to take a turn using the ice saw, breaker bar, pike pole and ice tongs to harvest ice the way our ancestors did in the days before refrigeration.  For your listening pleasure, Rick Spencer will be performing a selection of songs from his “Historic Songs of American Work and Trades” program during the ice harvest.  Guided tours of the museum will also be available.

In winter we humans can go into our houses, turn up the heat, and stay warm. Outdoors we put on snowsuits, boots, and mittens. But what about wildlife species? Play a game to learn about hibernation, migration, and sleepers. Find out which animals stay around and their strategies for surviving the winter. Make a jello pretend animal and see if it can survive the cold! This is an indoor/outdoor program. Dress warmly, and be prepared to be outdoors for most of the program.

What's that Touching My Face?

What You'll Need: 

  • Feathers
  • Cloth
  • Cotton balls
  • Anything that is small and textured
  • Blindfold 

How to play: 

Have two players face each other, one blindfolded and the other with all of their collected items.

The player who is sighted gently brushes the objects, one by one, across the blindfolded player's cheek. The player with the items must handle them carefully as to not let the other player tell what each item is.

Stuffed Green Pepper Soup

Here's an old family favorite at our house!  Perfect for a chilly winter day!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1small chopped onion
  • 3 large green peppers chopped
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 TBS brown sugar
  • 1 10 1/2 can beef broth
  • 1 Tbs Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp. basil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • salt and pepper to taste

Brown onions and ground beef in a stockpot. Add rest of ingredients and cook for several hours.
