Westfield ROCKS Hide and Seek, Do You Rock?

By Laurie Ritrosky, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Westfield-Southwick April 12, 2018

Have you found one yet? They're hiding all over the area, painted treasures that you can find!

It's art. It's a treasure hunt. It's getting outdoors. It's so much fun and it's the latest craze sweeping Facebook!

Westfield Rocks! was started by Kim LaJuett Galinski and her boyfriend, Dave Bourdeau, last May. They got the idea from a group in Florida and have found rocks from California and Texas. Kim: "It's something positive and we hope it brings people joy."

"It's simple really. If you find a rock when you're out in the City of Westfield snap a picture and post it [on the Facebook page.] Keep the rock. Move the rock. Leave the rock. It's totally up to you! Make your own rocks if you want. Hide them all around the city. Spreading good vibes and creative artistic energies in our community because....Westfield Rocks!"

This is so much fun, especially for families. Children just love finding them, and parents love getting the kids outdoors. If you haven't started "rocking" yet, Spring is the perfect time of year to start!

Westfield Rocks! is having an event the weekend of April 21 & 22 called Westfield ROCKS Hide And Seek. "Let's make a game out of the sensation that has hit Westfield! We invite everyone to take part in hiding painted rocks throughout Westfield. But the clues, along with a picture of each rock, will need to be posted on the Facebook event page HERE. The best way to do this is to take a picture of the rock with some of the distinguishable background, post it to the event discussion with a clue to its location. If you find a rock that is part of the game let us know on the event page. Also be sure to take another picture and post a new clue to its new location. It's the perfect way to end spring break."

Smooth rocks are easiest to work with, but any rock will do. Make sure rocks are clean and dry before painting. Acrylic paint works best. You can also use sharpies or markers. When your rock is done, I recommend putting on a clear coat sealer to protect it from the elements as it will be outside for some time.

The best part is you can paint whatever you want! You don't have to be a great artist. This is a wonderful project for kids of all ages.

Kids love painting them, hiding them and finding them! Adults do, too!

There are several other Facebook rock groups in the area, including Rock On Agawam, R.O.C.K in the 01001, Southwick Rocks, and Western Mass Rocks.

But you don't have to be on Facebook to enjoy the experience. Just paint some rocks and hide them, knowing it will bring a little cheer to the person who finds them. Or you can go hunting for some yourself.

Happy hunting and rock on!

Here are the rocks that my son and I painted and will be hiding around Westfield for the Westfield ROCKS Hide and Seek event. Let us know if you find one!
